Spring Cleaning - Refresh your beauty!!

Posted 01 May, 2009, at 09:15AM by Shana King

Ladies, it’s time to take a good, hard look into your makeup bag. How grimy is it really…don’t lie! Treat your makeup bag just like you do your closet. If you have something in there that you haven’t worn in over a year – it’s time to let it go!

Remember some products have a shelf life and if you can’t remember the last time you used it then you should toss it! Mascara, foundation and some lip-glosses may lose their performance after 3 to 6 months. So check products for consistency and smell. You don’t want to put products on your face or eyes that could potentially have unwanted bacteria.

I like to get a separate makeup bag or plastic bin and label it fall/winter color. If you’re like me, you use different shades of foundation, blush, eye shadow and lip color for the different seasons. By labeling and storing the different colors you will be able to identify which products are essential for each season.

Take a face or disinfectant wipe and clean out your makeup bag or bins to remove any unwanted bacteria. I even like to clean out the inside of lids and applicators as well as the pumps on my foundation bottles. Let them fully dry before putting them back in your bag.

Ask yourself, how long has it been since I last cleaned my makeup brushes? Cleaning your makeup brushes frequently will keep products from being altered by unwanted oils and bacteria, you will not irritate sensitive skin, and most importantly it allows the brush to perform the way it is suppose to!

Follow these easy steps to revitalize your makeup tools.
Storage: Store brushes in their custom pouches to assure they retain their shape and the bristles will not be crushed.

Cleaning: Once a month use mild face soap or shampoo and water. Gently work soap or shampoo through the bristles. Swirl the brush in circles in the palm of your hand and rinse with water, until water rinses clear.

Drying: Let brushes air dry. Let them dry flat by allowing the head to hang over the edge of your sink or ledge. This way not water will get into the handle.

Quick Cleanings: As needed, use an alcohol-free swab to remove excess makeup in between big washes.
