Make-Up Basics Part 6: Lips, last but definitely not least!!

Posted 17 April, 2009, at 01:53PM by Shana King

Applying the right amount of lip color or lip-gloss at the end of your makeup application will complete your look.

Before you begin apply some lip moisturizer/balm so your lips are not dry. Your lip products will go on much nicer.

Are you sick of your lip color & lip-gloss fading after ½ hour. Try penciling in a soft nude lip liner over the surface of your lips. That way when you color fades slightly you will still have a base.

For lipstick, if you apply directly from the stick it will give a heavier application, it you want to soften it slightly then use a lip brush to apply it.

Gloss works great in the center of the lips on top of lipstick the enhance the shape. It is also a great alternative and a more natural option for an everyday look.
Make sure you are choosing the right shade of lipstick and lip liner. And don’t use a dark lip liner with a light lipstick, unless you are going to an 80’s party!!

Exfoliate your lips especially during the winter months. Chapped lips are never attractive.

Last important tip, review your makeup, are your eyes heavy and intense? If they are then make sure to tone down your lips, it will even out.

A great tip for making lip color last longer is to apply one coat of lipstick and then take a 2-ply tissue and separate it, place it over the lips and apply powder to the lips over the tissue with a powder brush. Place another coat of lipstick and repeat the tissue/powder process.

Makes those very creamy lipsticks last so much longer.

I exfoliate my lips after I brush my teeth simply by using my toothbrush to slough off the dead skin. I usually do this before I put on an extra sticky lip gloss (i.e. MAC lipglass). I also put a ton of lip butter before I go to sleep so I wake up to moisturized lips in the morning!

This is not a tip but a question—I’m not part of the competition as I’m well stocked right now.

Shana, what can be done about lipstick bleed?. It’s something I’ve had to deal with as I get older. I like creamy lipstick but it never stays put.

When I am going to be speaking in public for a long time and know I won’t be able to touch up, I will often use a heavier lipstick but apply it in multiple thin layers. One thin layer, let it set/dry, then a second layer can often last me 3-5hrs of constant talking.

This is where a good lipbrush really makes a difference — i prefer the flat wider brushes, as i can get the thinnest possible layers.

This is what I do to make my lip color stay on longer. Before applying anything to my lips I will usually exfoliate them using either a toothbrush or wet face cloth. Then I’ll apply some lip balm to moisturize them. While I’m applying my foundation and prepping my face I also apply some lightly to my lips to give it a base and apply loose powder on top. Next I line with a nude pencil and fill in. I apply my nude lipstick right from the stick and if I’ve applied too much I blot a little onto a tissue. I then apply some clear lipgloss to the centre of my lips, top and bottom. Looks pretty and natural!

  6. Rosebud Salve! This product is amazing for hands and lips :) I exfoliate my lips when I brush or wash my face and like to apply the Rosebud before bed. Wake up with super soft lips every morning. I also use a Tarte sugar exfoliate/lip conditioner product when I know I’m out and about and problems arise.

So after all of this prepping behind the scenes lol I love to line my lips (as they are pretty narrow and small) to keep the lip colour in line and then I use OCC Lip Tar with a clear glosser on top if I’m feeling the need for more impact with shine. I apply a first coat with a brush lightly and go back for a second if I want more punch with the colour. I’ve found the Lip Tar doesn’t budge on my well exfoliated lips prepped with my little Burt’s Bees moisturizer (let dry while applying the rest of my makeup) and let’s me teach an 8hr workshop (with a lunch break) with little if any touch up needed! I heart OCC Lip Tars!

My Top 3 Tips for Lips:

    1. Keep your lips in top shape by: using an emollient balm under your lip products, and also at night before going to bed; exfoliating using a soft toothbrush, electric or non is fine; treating yourself to a lip mask! Make a paste out of sugar and honey and massage into your lips.

    2. Treat your lips like your face – Apply a light layer of foundation over your lips, and powder. This will allow your lip products to show their TRUE colour when applied on your lips.

    3. For bigger lips without injections – Line your lips with a cool-toned lip pencil that matches your bare lip colour, just on the outer edge of your natural lip line. Blend this line with a brush. Apply lipstick precisely with the same lip brush, and follow with gloss. DO NOT apply gloss where you have overlined your lips – because it catches the light and screams overlined lips! Apply concealer around the outer edges of your lips if you need to clean up or sharpen lines. Then the kicker – Highlight your cupid’s bow, and the middle of your lower lip. This makes your lips look nice and plump! Voila!
