Make-Up Basics Part 2: Concealer, Don't leave home Without it!

Posted 06 March, 2009, at 03:42PM by Shana King

Believe it or not, concealer is the most important step for many beauty lovers; some even use concealer to replace foundation all together. It’s become my new best friend. The trick is finding the right shade and mastering proper application. I promise, once you’ve learned how to seamlessly blend your concealer with your skin, you won’t leave home without it!

Here are a few simple and easy tips to achieve the perfect application every time.

First, ruthlessly examine your complexion to identify areas that require extra coverage. The more honest you are, the more effective you’ll be at finding the right product. – Do your eye’s have dark circles? – Does your skin bear the reminders of your frequent breakouts?

I recommend using a brush for concealer application for several reasons: – When dealing with sensitive areas or skin conditions applying product with your fingers may add bacteria, dirt and oils that could result in additional problems. – Using a brush will allow you to work in more sensitive areas without irritating the skin. – Using brushes will help your products last longer. Now that you’ve found the right shade, you want it to last!

Let’s get started:
Apply the concealer to the tip of your brush and begin by blending lightly to the desired area. For blemishes, I tap the product gently over the area.

Be aware of the consistency of the product. If you’re working with a liquid concealer, less is more.

Once the concealer has been applied, Lightly apply translucent or pressed powder to set it. Both products should blend into the skin.

Tip: Don’t reapply or layer your concealer. If you need to add more, simply wash the area and begin with a fresh application.

  1. 1 Stephanie G,

Should women have a wardrobe of concealer brushes just as we seem to acquire an assortment of concealers? Which of your brushes is best for the undereye area? And finally, is the pointed brush for stippling a spot such as a blemish or does it have other uses as well?

    Thanks much,

    Stephanie G.

what’s the trick (or brush, or concealer type, or application secret) to getting rid of blue-ish undereyes and looking finished in the undereye area without looking cakey, chalky (between both concealer and a finishing powder)???

TIP: I like to moisten the brush before applying concealer when I’m trying to cover healed discolorations. It gives a more natural finish.

  4. My latest trick is applying concealer to my undereye circles with my fingers, then using a fluffy brush to blend-blend-blend.

I think I get better, more natural coverage, when I don’t try too hard — less product CAN be more.
