Make-Up Basics Part 1: Foundation, the perfect beginning to a happy ending!

Posted 03 March, 2009, at 03:17PM by Shana King

Okay ladies, here’s what you been waiting for: make-up application demystified. During the next few weeks we’ll explain all the basic make-up how to’s. From foundation to lip products, we’ve simplified the process to help you put your best face forward. Remember it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Foundation:

1. First, choosing the right color for your skin is the end-all-be-all to a great application. It sets you apart from the amateurs.
2. Begin by testing different colors.
Visit your favorite beauty counter and spend time testing 2-3 shades. Choose the shade that is the closest match to your natural skin tone.
Here’s a tip: the shade you use for summer and winter skin may be different. I’ve found that I have to go one shade darker in the summer months because my skin is tanned, while in the winter it’s lighter. So don’t be alarmed at having to choose two different colors. In fact, you can even blend both shades together for those in between seasons.
3. Contrary to popular jokes, make-up is not war paint. There’s no need to slather it on all over your face.
Apply with a light, balanced hand and only where needed. I suggest focusing on your forehead, cheeks and chin area.
Blend in the color gently with a foundation brush to eliminate the appearance of streaks. I’ve found that foundation is also a great base for the eye’s, so I apply a small amount to my crease area.
4. Remember, blending is very important to create an even, natural look. To make sure you’ve done this properly, move into natural light to see if all areas of the face have been blended sufficiently
